Abstract

One of the government's efforts to control population growth is the family planning (KB) program through the use of contraception. Contraceptive use is influenced by several factors. This study aims to analyze the determinants of contraceptive use among women in urban Indonesia. This research is an observational study with a cross sectional design. The data were obtained from the Non-Communicable Diseases Research in 2016. The data analyzed including age, education, occupation, number of children, and index of possession as well as the use of contraception among women who had had sexual intercourse. Data were analyzed by using the chi-square test and multiple logistic regression. The results showed that work had no effect on contraceptive use. Meanwhile, the use of contraception among women aged 25–34 years was 2.823 times greater than those aged 55–64 years and this possibility decreased with age. At low education level, the likelihood was 1.441 higher than that of tertiary education. Those with 2–3 children were 8.120 times more likely than those who had none. Women with the lowest index of ownership were 1.196 times more likely than women with the highest index of ownership. Contraceptive use is influenced by age, education level, number of children, and ownership index. It is recommended to pay attention to the determinants that affect the use of contraceptives in every outreach/socialization of family planning programs so that the activities are right on target and can ultimately increase the use of contraception.
